Here’s exactly what works, what to skip, and how to coordinate the whole family without looking too matchy.
Start with light, flowy fabrics
Hawaii is warm, breezy, and humid. Linen, cotton, and soft flowy dresses photograph beautifully here because they move with the trade winds and keep you comfortable. Long dresses and skirts add motion to beach photos, while lightweight button-ups or linen shirts keep dads and kids cool. Skip heavy denim, stiff blazers, and anything you wouldn’t want to wear barefoot in the sand.
The best colors for Hawaii family photos
Soft, natural tones photograph best against O’ahu’s turquoise water and green mountains. Think cream, white, sand, sage, dusty blue, rust, and earthy neutrals. These colors let the scenery shine and keep skin tones warm in golden hour light. Avoid neon colors, which cast color onto faces, and large logos or graphic prints, which pull attention away from your family.
How to coordinate without matching
The all-white-shirts-and-jeans era is over, at least for me. Instead, pick two or three complementary colors and let each family member wear their own outfit within that palette. For example: mom in a cream dress, dad in a sage linen shirt with khaki shorts, kids in soft white and rust tones.
